This Year's Legends

Chris Newsome

Capt. Chris Newsome is a native of Tidewater, VA growing up in the small town of Cobbs Creek. He spent countless hours as a youth exploring the unique Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and later augmented his outdoor knowledge with a degree in marine science from Old Dominion University. After college, Chris obtained his captain’s license and started guiding fly and light tackle anglers on Virginia’s saltwater. Today, after 18 years in the guide business, Capt. Newsome bases charters out of his home waters in Mathews County.

His passion for the sport and all-around expertise has led to national exposure in many media outlets such as the New York Times. Capt. Newsome is a stalwart conservationist and uses his marine science knowledge to educate clients and the public about the need to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay.

Colby Trow

Colby Trow was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and grew up in the outdoors fishing, skiing, and windsurfing with his family all over the world. Fly fishing has been a passion for him since he was 10 years old and his professional career began at age 14 when he started commercially tying flies for shops and clubs. Throughout his college years, Colby spent summers instructing fly fishing classes and guiding in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.

He and his brother opened Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg, VA in 2003 and since have grown the business to include a shop, online retail, a fly fishing school, and a stable of 10 guides that specialize in trout, smallmouth bass, muskie, carp, and Tenkara fly fishing.

Colby organizes the Mossy Creek Invitational annually, one of the largest fundraisers for Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF), and has been presented with the PHWFF national Patriot Award for his sustained extraordinary service from 2006-2017. Colby Trow is a legend in anyone’s book and we’re lucky to call him a native son of Virginia.
